TENSION IN ROME.
FASCISTS AND THE CHURCH. LATERAN TREATY VIOLATED. United Press Assn. —Klee. Tel. Copyright. ROME, May 28. A party of Fascist students broko the windows of tho offices of the Catholic. Action Party as a protest against the distribution of tracts dealing with martyrdom, and troops in consequence paraded the city all night long. Feeling ran high, but there was no incident. , The recent clashes caused the newspaper II Populo di Roma to publish a bitter comment blaming the Catholic Action Party for the tension, and saying they had become definitely political and were ranged against the Fascist Party. The newspaper denies that Fascists insulted the Pope or priests, and suggests that Cardinal Pacelli, the Papal Secretary, resigned because he disagreed with (lie Action Party. 'Plie Vatican authorities arc vigorously inquiring into an incident at tho Papal Chancery, which is situated in the centre of Home, where a group or sludents, it is alleged, tried lo force an entrance, shouting “ Down with the Pope, and Death lo the Papacy!" It is considered that the demonsi ration, if it occurred, is a clear violation of the Laleran Treaty, which stipulated that the Pope’s person is sacred.
Anti-Vatican demonstrators attacked a kiosk in lhe centre of Home, and burned copies of the Osservatore Romano, the orcaa of tbs Vatican.
