ROME, May 28. ‘T came -to Italy to attempt to kill Mussolini, and would probably have succeeded if I had found somebody In Rome whom I could trust," confessed Michele Schirru, in answering a judge at the opening of his trial, at which he sat In a huge cage guarded by Garibineers. The indictment mentioned coded corespondence with a resident of London named Polidowi, allegedly urging Schirru not to miss his opportunity at the State opening of Parliament to bomb Mussolini. Experts will give evidence as to the composition of; two bombs found in Schirru’s luggage. Schirru wounded three Italian detectives before he was arrested. Later. Schirru has been sentenced to death, and will toe shot In the back at dawn. \ He admitted that he was ah Anarchist and maintained that he did not receive help from any accomplices. He neglected chances to shoot Signor Musolini at public gatherings owing to the danger of killing by-standerb. The police in -Rome arrested Michele Schirru on 'February 3, who was found to toe in possession of two high explosive bombs, which the police alleged were intended to be used to kill Signor Mussolini. On being taken to a police station Schirru drew a revolver, shot and wounded five policemen and then wounded himself. One of the policemen died that evening. Schirru, a -Sardinian by birth left America for Italy last March, He was known to the Italian police as a dangerous anarchist. His passport was issued In New York. It was later stated that' he had confessed to a plot to kill Signor Mussolini and that a band Italians were plotting in London to that end.
