AN INCREASING DEMAND
(Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 27
An Important step toward complete co-operation in the fruit and produce growing, canning and can manufacturing Industries was made when Viscount Cobham opened a new can-mak-ing factory at Worcester. Until recent years the English canning Industry did little to foster fruitgrowing. Five years ago British fruit, vegetables and cream were scarcely obtainable in cans. The industry now employs 11,000 men and 40 firms are engaged in canping, Allhough the main aim Is to share in supplying the English market, for which £187,000,000 worth of canned goods are imported annually, it Is found that there is a considerable demand abroad for certain English fruit in cans, notably strawberries.
