LORD BADEN-POWELL,
The Dominion to-day welcomes Lord Baden Powell, a man who has done more for the youth of the world than any other individual of his time. The code which he elaborated for the Boy Scouts goes past race, differences in religion, and national antipathies, and embraces the youth of every nation on earth from Eskimo to Tierra del Fuegian, from Ecuadorian to Japanese. It can truly be said that no organisation is so universal In character. The good that the movement has accomplished Is beyond all reckoning. In imbuing in youth a spirit of independence, service and citizenship as divorced from militarism it was, and is, one of the greatest contributions towards world peace. A renowned savant once said that if every boy in the world was a Boy Scout war in the course of a generation would be a thing of the past. Numerically the Boy Scouts of New Zealand are not as strong proportionately as those in some other countries but this is no doubt due to the fact that until lately the youth of the nation was conscripted for military training. Now that' that youth is free, and following upon the Chief Scout’s visit, the Boy Scouts of New Zealand will come into their own and till a more important position than before in the cosmopolitan brotherhood which Lord Baden Powell founded. Lord Baden Powell will go down in history as a great soldier, but greater still will be his fame as a benefactor to the whole of the human race.
