THE RAILWAYS.
NON-POLITICAL BOARD. OBJECTIONS TO BE OVERCOME. WELLINGTON, Wednesday., The statement of the Prime Minister to the effect that the Government during the approaching • session will submit to Parliament a proposal to remove the State railways from political control and hand them over to a non-political board of directors, has not appealed strongly to many of Hie workers. The Labour Party, generally look upon the proposal with a good deal of suspicion, the recent Commission having recommended reduced staffs, increased workmen's fares, lessened farmers’ privileges and olher perquisites to which many travellers have become accustomed. The probabilities are that the Government will get its way in the long run; but, even then there will be difficulties in the way not easily surmounted. The selection of directors, if with only a few score applicants for service, will be a difficult task and it is not easy yet to see from whence the qualified railway authorities will come. The chairman of the Board of Directors is likely to be the prominent figure in the new administration, but lie is not yet in sight.
