LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS.
_ SUGGESTED DEFERMENT. »A PRACTICAL ECONOMY. ” MAYOR OF HAMILTON’S VIEW. When the suggestion that in order lo assist public economy, municipal and other public body elections, due to take at the end of March, should be deferred for a period, was mentioned by a Waikato Times reporter to the Mayor of Hamilton, Mr. J. R. Fow, the latter applauded the idea. Mr. Fow said lie- regarded this as one of the most practical methods yet suggested to practice economy and to effect very considerable savings of public money. Under present conditions there could, said His Worship, be no great cleavage of policy in municipal life. There can be no great expansion, but rigid economy in expenditure will be the policy of councils from the end to end of New Zealand. “There are,” he added, “some mayors and councillors who have announced that they proposed to retire, but I believe they will he prepared’ to sacrifice time for another year when it is in the public interest to do so. There is no doubt that the saving will be most substantial and I believe that the suggestion is a most reasonable one and will receive general approval from the public.”
