ATHLETES AND LIQUOR

TERMINOLOGICAL INEXACTITUDE. CHAPMAN’S MESSAGE. LONDON, Feb 16. United Press Assn.—Elec- Tel. Copyright. Lady Astor’s message was in reply to the following cablegram from A. P. F. Chapman, the cricket captain who is at present in South Africa with the M.C.C. team. “We thank Lady Astor for the great interest she takes in test cricket, but beg to state that she has been guilty of a terminological inexactitude. For her further information we suggest that she should apply to Richardson, Kippax, Ponsford, Grinimett, Oldfield and Hornibrook.”

The cablegram was signed Chapman, White, Wyatt, Peebles, Ilendren, Hammond, Leyland, Goddard and Duckworth, the team in South Africa. “Personally, I am a teetotaller,” Chapman added.

Lady's Astor’s reply appears on page 10. In a debate in the House of Commons on a private member’s prohibition bill, Viscountess Astor assailed liquor advertisements, singling out one depicting a cricketer quailing beer after an innings. “Why were we beaten in cricket?” she asked. “The simple answer is because the Australians did not drink.”
