HAMILTON E. SCHOOL.

HEADMASTER’S REPORT. NEED FOR MORE DOORS. Fifty-eight new pupils have been enrolled at the Hamilton East school, the roll number standing at 619. Seventy-five scholars left at the end of last year. The average attendance last year was 560. At the meeting of the school committee the headmaster Mr. W. A. Curteis, reported that school cricket matches would re-commence on Wednesday and a certain quantity of new material was essential. Realising the expense to which schools were put to secure sports material the Athletic Association had decided to Inaugurate a new plan for Its sports day when a reasonable charge for admission would be made. Confectionary, soft drinks and ice cream stalls would be conducted by the teachers and the profits derived from these sources expended In the purchase of gear, which will be distributed pro rata among the schools. Some match material at least could be secured by this means and there might be sufficient money available to permit of a donation to the Cricket Association for the use of the grounds. The new room at the school was under constriction, and should be completed in about a month. The steps leading to the junior department required to be enlarged and the installation of another drinking fountain was required. At present there was daily a big queue of children waiting at the one tap for a drink. Veritable Death-traps. “ Has the committee ever considered the question of having a few extra doors placed in some of the worst rooms, in case of fire or earthquake?” queried Mr Curteis. “These old rooms arc veritable death traps. In one case four rooms containing over 200 children open on to one narrow corridor, averaging one door to fifty children.”
