COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS
NEW CLUB IN WELLINGTON. The new- building of the Wellington Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association, which [wais opened last week, cost approximately £75,000. It is of eight floors, including the- basement. It occupies a site CO feet by 100 feet unit is constructed in steel frame and concrete, being designed as far as possible to resist earthquakes. It is the maximum height allowed —102 feet. Back of the entrance hall on the ground floor is a members’ lounge, which leads to the main bar. On the right of the h.all is a visitors’ room, and on the left the secretary’s office. On the first floor is . a large reading room in front and a billiard room of similar size at the back. On the second floor are a library and card rooms. Adjoining the library, but having access from the office entrance, is a rest room for members’ wives. The next four floors are taken up with offices which can be readily converted, in part or as a whole, into bedroom accommodation, this provision being made in case the premises become to be utilised as a residential club. On the top floor is situated an up-to-date diningroom and kitchen. On the roof are the caretaker’s quarters. The walls of the main room are panelled with rimu. The floor is the reading room is wood parquet, suitable for dancing. The remainder of the floors arc of rubber tiles. The whole building is heated with water with an oil-burning equipment. Steam and gas -are used for the kitchen. There is subterranean access through the basement to the old premises in Victoria Street.
