WEEKLY HALF-HOLIDAY.
ALTERATION URGED. i OPINION AT MORRINSVILLE. The agitation for a change of day in the weekly half holiday at Morrinsville started in earnest at a lf>rse-lv-attended meeting. Mr A. H. J. Wyatt, president of the Chamber o Commerce presided. , Mr C. M. Gummer said that he naa been a supporter of the Saturday halfholiday, but he had found out tnat it was a mistake. His reason tor changing bis opinion was that the farmers who were the town s best customers found that Saturday the most convenient day to come into town with their families. Another reason was that neighbouring towns were open on Saturday and drew 1 usiness away from Morrinsvllle. Personally he still liked Saturday, but business had lo he considered and there was no doubt that Te Aroha was taking a lot of their business away bv keeping open on Saturday. To ‘show that the employers were anxious lo treat their employees fairlv they would be prepared to close at 12 o'clock sn as to allow them the clear afternoon. Eventually the following resolution was carried: “That this meeting of electors believes that a change of Hie half-holiday from Saturday to Wednesday is essential for the wcllare of the town, and agrees to work whole-heartedly In carry it into effect, and that in the event of the day being changed the hour of closing on Wednesday be 12 noon.” The following committee was set up In organise a campaign: Messrs. Gummer, Hetherington. G. Philpoll, Blaker, Gifford and Echlin.
