lan Hay's turf comedy, “The Sport of Kings," is to he made into a talkie by the Gainsborough (British) studios.
"Young Woodley,” the much-dis-cussed picture of the love of a youth for ills headmaster’s wife, is due for release in Auckland shortly. Miss Madeline 'Carroll plays the part of “Laura,” and Frank Lawton his original role of Young Woodley,
George Arliss is reported to have started work on his newest film at Hollywood, “The Ruling Passion."
Edgar Wallace is expecting to get £ iO,OUO down for the film rights of “On the Spot,” (in the stage version of which Frank Harvey is to he seen in Australia shortly.
Mr and Mrs Nils Asther (Vivian Duncan) are said to he expecting the stork. They sail soon for Berlin. This splits up Hie Duncan sister team, for a decade one of the most famous in American show business.
Thomas Meighan is coming back to pictures. The famous star wilt play a role in the Fox production of “Young Sinners."
Edwina Booth, answering Mrs Duncan Renaldo’s alienation of affections suit for £IOO,OOO, denies that she stole the actor's love while the two were on location in Africa with the " Trader Horn ” company.
Bruce Rogers, younger brother of Charles (Buddy), is off the Paramount pay-roll, after three months on the lot without a part. William Austin, English “ siiiy ass ” comedian, is also finished at Paramount.
Dolores Costello, wife of John Barrymore, has renounced the screen for home and baby.
Maureen O’Sullivan and John Garrick, the lovers In "Song o’ My Heart,” also in “Just Imagine," will have the chief supporting roies in Will Rogers’ picture, “A Connecticut Yankee,” adapted from Mark Twain’s classic. Miss O’Sulivan will be the princess and Garrick the page. Air Garrick, as Reginald Dandy, was in New Zealand as the lover in {he stage version of “Rose Marie."
John Gilbert's next talkie will be “Gentleman’s Fate.” This is a story by Ursula Parrott, whose “Strangers -May Kiss” is a forthcoming Norma Shearer picture. Louis Wolhelm has been selected to play the part of Gilbert’s brother in “Gentleman's Fate.”
Charlie Chaplin’s latest, “City Lights,” had its premiere at the George M. Cohan Theatre, New York, on February 1. It is a non-dialogue production, with sound effects, composed in the main by Mr Chaplin himself. The comedian appears in the familiar derby, cane and big shoes. Virginia Cherrlll plays the role of a flower girl loved by the little tramp.
Sir Harry Lauder is engaged in a series of six British short films, each one featuring two of his inimitable songs. The names of the songs are: “I Love a Lassie,” “The Saftest o’ the Family,” “ Stop Your Tickling, Jock,” “ Rising Early in the Morning,” “ We Parted on the Shore,” “The Wedding of Sandy McNab," “ Waggle of the Kilt,” “I’m the Boss of the Iloose,” “ When I was Twenty-one,” “ JJoughie the Baker," “My Heather Belle,” and “ Keep Right on to the End of the Road."
Herbert Mundin, comedian of “ The Desert Song ” in New Zealand, is “ star ” of a talkie, “ East Lynne on the Western Front,” which is being produced at Elstree, near London.
Lewis Ayres, who has the leading role in " The Doorway to Hell ’” has had a meteoric career. First with Garbo in “ The Kiss,” then his role in “ All Quiet on the Western Front,” then “ Common Clay,” and now “ Doorway to Hell,” a role totally different from any of his previous portrayals. in “The Doorway to Hell ” Ayres is cast as a gangster with a Napoleonic complex, who lights his way to leadership. Included in the cast are Charles Judels. Dorothy -Matthews, and Leon Janney,
