An outstanding anniversary in the Dominion history falls to-day. On January 17, 1853, the Governor, Sir George Grey, proclaimed the Constitution Act, passed by the Imperial Parliament the year before, by which the colony obtained representative institutions. The Waikato Regimental and Hamilton Municipal Band, under Mr A. E. Savage, will render a programme at the Waikato Hospital to-morrow afternoon, and in the evening will play at the Ferry Bank. The 9-tpn yacht Oimara, with a crew of five, is to start to-day from St. Hilda, Melbourne, for New Zealand. It is expected to reach the Dominion in 14 days. Mr F. J. Bennell, the owner, is the skipper. The directors of the Northern Wairoa Co-operative Dairy Company, have decided that they should substantially reduce their honoraria and ali salaries, including that of the managing-director. The men working under Arbitration Court awards will not be affected. Good progress is being made with the construction of the additional storey on the Nurses’ Home at the Waikato Hospital by the contractor, Mr H. B. Martin. When completed, the building will have three storeys and will probably be the most handsome in appearance at the hospital. The Leader of the British Conservative Party, Mr Stanley Baldwin, speaking at Birmingham said that when he took office most of his money was invested in the iron trade. It was decided to co-operate, and Messrs H. Allen and C. Parker were appointed delegates. During a discussion at the Te Awamutu Jersey Club meeting on Friday evening on the subject of standardised cheese, it was stated that Kakepuku Co-operative Dairy Co. has reverted to the manufacture of full-cream cheese. It was added that the Government’s action in' requiring a fuller percentage of fat in cream had made the margin between standardised cheese and the full-cream article to small that it did not warrant factories continuing the manufacture of the standardised article. As a result of conferences held some months ago, the New Zealand Government has agreed to suspend the existing tariff on cinematograph films and to exempt such ‘films from duty under the British preferential and general . tariffs. An Order-in-Counoil to this effect appears in 'the current issue of the Gazette, and states that the suspension of 'the tariff will take effect from July 1, 1930. The Or-der-in-Council cuts out the present duty of Id a foot on imported films, but the film hire tax will still stand. Traffic tallies taken by the Matamata County Council on main highways at Mamaku, Lichfield and Kaimai during the holiday period give the average daily figures as follows: Mamaku —motor cars, 300 (277 in 1929-30); service cars, 17 (20); motor buses, 5 (2); motor lorries, 8 (7); motor cycles, 23 (21); total motors, 353 (327 in 1929-30). Lichfield—motor cars, 115 (112 in 1929-30); service cars, 2 (5); motor lorries, 11 (13); motor cycles, 12 (11) ; total motors, 140 (141 in 192930). lvaimai—motor cars, 118 (90 in 1929-30); service cars, 4 (4); motor lorries, 6 (5); motor cycles, 10 (5); total motors, 138 (105 in 1929-30).
