EMPLOYERS’ LIABILITY. BUSINESS MEN CONCERNED. AUCKLAND, Friday. Surprise was expressed at a meeting of the council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce at a clause in the Unemployment Act making it an offence, punishable by a fine not exceeding £2O, for an employer to retain the services of any person who has failed to register or' pay instalments of the levy imposed under the Act. It was considered that this placed an undue obligation on employers. It was decided to refer the matter to the Associated Chambers of Commerce with a view to taking concerted action-

Smith, Minister of Labour, his comment was brief. “ It is pathetic to think that after all the explanations given by the press, in addition to reports of lengthy discussions in Parliament, leading businessmen should 'come along and make such discoveries as this.”
