AUCKLAND STATION.

EFFECT OF NEW LOCATION BENEFIT TO CAMBRIDGE. Cambridge is one of the stations which will benefit by lower fares and railway freights owing to the fact that the new Auckland railway station is 32 chains further south than the old one. Cambridge is 100 miles 35 chains from Auckland, but as five ohains over the mile must be counted as one mile, according to railway computation, fares to Cambridge are calculated as if it were 101 miles away. The first-class single fare from Auckland is, therefore, 15s Bd> but when the new station is opened Cambridge will be 100 miles 3 chains from Auckland, and the 100-mile rate will be charged namely, 15s 6d. The second-class single fare will be reduced from 10s 8d to 10s 7d. The benefits are more noticeable when it comes to parcel rates charged on the railways. Separate rates are charged on parcels for-the first 30 miles, for anything from 30 to 50 miles, for any mileage from 50 to 100 miles and for 'anything from 100 to 200 miles. Few stations will reap any benefit under this system of calculation, but Cambridge is one that will. Because the distance from Auckland to Cambridge is 35 chains over 100 miles, the 200-miles rate Is charged on all parcels carried between the two stations, but when the new station is opened the 100-mile rate will apply. Thus, a package weighing 141 b will be carried for Is instead of Is 6d, a package weighing 281 b will be carried for Is 6d instead of 2s and a package weighing 2cwt. will be earned for 6a instead of 10s 6d. An Anomaly Removed. The new apportionment will remove a long-standing anomaly as between Cambridge and Te Awamutu, both of which are approximately the same distance from Auckland, 100 miles 35 chains, as' against 99 miles 78 chains. Whereas Te Awamutu is at present charged the 100-mile parcel rate, Cambridge is charged the. 200-miles rate. The bringing of Cambridge within the 100-miles rate will dissipate a source of civic rivalry.
