NGARUAWAHIA.
MEETING OF COUNCIL. THE FORTNIGHT’S BUSINESS. At the fortnightly meeting of the Ngaruawahia Borough Council the Mayor, Mr H. J. Sampson presided. Also present were Crs. J. S. Johnston, W. Paterson, S. Saulhrey,'A. Watts, W. Payne, R. Eyre and the town clerk, Mr H. B. Fraser. With reference to Armistice Day observance it was resolved to carry out the same procedure as that of last year. Cream Lorries. The town clerk reported that he had attended a conference of local bodies concerned when c|e)rtain re-' quests from the New Zealand Cooperative Dairy Company regarding exemption of motor lorries engaged in croam and milk carting from standard loading regulations, were discussed. He reported that suggestions made on 3 behalf of the company had been declined by the conference. —The Council concurred with the action of the conference in declining the requests.
Railway Hoarding.
An answer to the Council’s letter regarding the obstruction created by a' large hoarding on the present site was received from the Railway Advertising Department, stating that they had no objections to the alternative site suggested by the Council. The town clerk reported that officials of the Department had reported adversely upon the present site and decided . upon an alternative one at the’ southern end. This site is opposite the brickworks, half a chain clear of the road.
Application Declined,
An application from G. Marriott to erect two further signs at his service station was declined by reason of causing obstruction.
Revised Motor Regulations,
A draft copy, of proposed new motor regulations for the issue of drivers’ licenses was forwarded by the Transport Board. The town clerk reported that under the old regulations he' could issue licenses only to residents of the borough. Cr. Paterson was of opinion that a declaration to the fact that an applicant had not been refused a license from any other authority would be necessary. : Parking Signs. In pursuance of the new by-law relating to parking of motor vehicles, the erection of adequate signs adjacent to the Waipa Hotel was discussed.— It was resolved to alter the present signs to face the traffic and to ask the police to take action thereafter. In connection with prohibition of smoking in the Town Hall it was resolved to acquaint persons hiring the hall of their responsibility in seeing that this by-law is observed. Miscellaneous. The Valuation Department wrote with reference to a letter regarding the re-valuation of farm lands within the borough, advising that proposals along the lines of periodic re-valuation made in the past were not considered sufficient to meet the case and stating that the matter would be looked into further. —The letter was received. '
DOMAIN BOARD. The Council then sat as a Domain Board. The action of the Mayor in authorising levelling work to be carried out on the present playing area at Paterson Park was endorsed. Cr. Paterson reported that noxious weeds were rapidly gaining ground on certain parts of the park, and it was resolved to have same cleared. Further work of ploughing and levelling of the unimproved area was deferred.
