BOXING,

TROWERN AND MORGAN DRAW. WIIANGAR El, Thursday. The finals of the Whangarei Boxing Association’s amateur tournament were held this evening. The professional bout between Ted Morgan and Reg. Trowern was very interesting. Morgan's weight was 10.3 and Trowern’s 10.4. The referee's decision of a draw was well received by the crowd.

NOTES FROM TE AROHA.

ACTIVITY ON THE TRACKS. ANTIQUE AND SIR RUSSELL. (Special to the Times.) TE AROHA, Friday. None of the locally-trained horses looks brighter than Antique. Although he scored at Cambridge on Labour Day he was not thoroughly tuned up, but it is expected- that he will be in time for the Auckland summer meeting. Sir Russell is sprinting well and retaining his : pace, bdt is not yet ready to compete in distances of ovei a mile. Star Lap’s Debut. The Sandstar Ally - Star Lap will probably be among the starters In the two-year-old events at the Waikato meeting, while, judging by, the work allotted him, the Catmint gelding Simint will also carry silk there. Proepeots of Black Malre. Black Maire has been showing signs of stiffness in the joints, which, however, wears off in the course of his exercise work. During this season he will do better on yielding tracks rather than on hard surfaces, and his condition being very solid lie should soon get on to tiie winning list again. Lady Van© Developing. Since returning from the Auckland meeting Lady Vane has thickened out very materially, and bears a much more robust appearance than heretofore. The Weathervane Ally is executing slow work on the tracks, and will not be hurried, as she has no early engagements. - , «* ' St. Warrlgal’s Breeding. When St. Warrigal was put into work last year lie was generally supposed to be a candidate of short pedigree. Consequent upon his recent victories inquiries as to his breeding lines have been made in the right quarters. His sire, St. Anians, by Soult—Lottie (Auckland Cup winner) , was well known as a performer, and particularly as the sire of Gold Kip, Oakleigh, Taumai and other winners, having been at the stud at Te Aroha West for some years. His dam was by Warrigal, who traced back to that good sire Ingomar, while her dam was by Freedom, who won many races in the colours of the late Dan O’Brien. On' breeding lines St. Warrigal can boast strong staying strains.

Return of G. A. Reid. After being over at Matamata for the past six months awaiting the completion of the local training tracks, trainer G. A. Reid returned here this week with his team, comprising Glenstar, Marble King, Lady Musk and a three-year-old gelding by Peach Brandy—Orma by Solferino— Irma. Glenstar is looking remarkably well, for in point of condition he jvould rank with that of many of New Zealand’s high-class performers. The Peach Brandy gelding is of the very plain type, but has a very game head, good bard bone and ample heart room.

Marble King as a Hurdler.

Marble King is now being schooled over the obstacles. On Tuesday morning hurdles were erected on the plough track, and in company with Glenstar the Marble Arch gelding went satisfactorily, flying the fences more quickly than his companion. He is certainly a rare stamp of a jumper, and may take high rank in this department.

Another Glen Albyn. The latest addition to M. Lipsey’s growing team is a three-year-old bay filly by Glen Albyn—Glenburn, by Spalpeen. She is well grown, but. much too low in condition to be expected to carry her owner’s colours in the near future. A Government Scoop. Last year the Te Aroha Trotting Club made a profit of £62 2s 8d over its annual meeting. The Government netted a gain of £llsl 2s 3d over the fixture. Lucky Alice Improving. It is some time since the Lucullus mare Lucky Alice lias raced Lo advati

tage, but for some months the tracks have not suited her style of action. It Is quite likely she may race better on a llrm course, lmt in any case it is yet too soon for her to be counted a back number. Cross-country Aspirant. Trainer G. A. Reid’s Tribulation gelding Distress has attracted the attention of Mr R. H. Townsend, of Eureka, and the fine big chestnut gelding will be put through a course of education at the hands of this hunting and show-ring enthusiast. He will thus have a chance of becoming proficient as a jumper, and being a rare stamp of a cross-country horse may be racing in steeplechase company next winter. As his breeding lines include a predominance of Musket blood there Should be little doubt as to his staying ability.

High Quality.

Ranking with the nicest thoroughbred fillies bred in this district for some years is Mr A. J. Mond’s Lady Musk, by Musketoon —Miss Amans, therefore a half-sister to Marble King. She is quite a different type from the latter, being very much lower set. Of a very even conformation and showing plenty of qualify, this two-year-old is sure to come in for general admiration when she makes her racing debut in public. Although well forward in condition it is not intended to start Her at the Waikato meeting.

A Team Addition.

For some years the Waihou sportsman Mr Alex. Swney has raced more for the love of “the sport of kings” than from the point ol' view of the resultant revenue. This week he added to his team a five-year-oid gelding by St. Amans —San Fran mare, which he purchased from the breeder, Mr' P. O’Grady, owner of Crown Arch, lie is in excellent condition, and good judges who have inspected him speak highly of Mr Swney’s purchase

Master Latour Sprinting Well. Although Master Latour has been galloping smartly on the tracks this week it is considered that the events he is engaged in at Te Rapa will be found quite long enough for him. Trainer Llpsey’s Charges. It was at first intended that the Muskeloon—Extractor mare representative in Lipsey’s stable should be turned out at his owner’s property, Mangaiti, for a few months after being broken in. It has now been decided to put him into work right away, and his appearance and condition seems to justify this resolve. A few weeks from now will tell whether he possesses the pace his conformation would lead one Lo expect him to have. Mr Irwin Hunt’s Marble Arch ■ —Bonnie Fishwife filly lightened up in the breaking-in process, and is resting at her owner’s farm for a lime. Track Work. At the course yesterday morning Glen Star and Marble King were the first out, and they executed useful work. The Marble Arch —Amans Queen gelding went twice round the plough, and the Valkyrian filly put in half-pace work over a circuit. Town Bird, who is Improving week by week, bowled along very freely over two miles, and was going well at the finish. He will be quite ready to race next month. Miss Albyn, looking very bright, had an advantage over Star Lap in a four-furlong spin run in 54sec. Master Latour was sent at half pace for a round, and then lined up for a five-furlongs ilutter with Indolent and Black Maire. The latter soon hit the front and finished a length to the good from Master Latour, with Indolent close up, in lmin 7sec.
