WARD SYSTEM

QUERY BY COUNCILLOR. MATTER NOT PURSUED.

A query by Cr. W. Bourne to the Mayor, Mr J. R. Fow, at last evening’s meeting of the Borough Council, as to the advisability of adopting the ward system of representation on the Council, was not pursued to .any length. Cr. Bourne considered that it might be an excellent idea as it appeared that great difficulty would be experienced in securing members for the incoming 'Council. In differing from Cr. Bourne, Cr. F. H. Clapham remarked that Hamilton was only a small city while even big cities had not adopted the ward system. At present a councillor could say he worked for the interests of Hamilton as a whole; under a ward system a councillor would be at the beck and call of every ratepayer in' the area. - Upon - Cr. Bourne pointing out that he was only’ making a query, not a suggestion, the matter lapsed.
