BOROUGH COUNCIL

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING- • ROUTINE BUSINESS. The following Inward correspondence was dealt with by the Hamilton Borough Council at Its meeting last evening, the Mayor, Mr J. R. Fow, presiding. Btreet Orosslngs. Arising out of a suggestion by the Hamilton agency of the Auckland Automobile Association the borough engineer, Mr Worley, wrote that it was not practicable to construct dish crossings at the pedestrian crossings in Victoria Street on account of the exoessive depth of kerbing. Cast iron plate crossings could toe constructed at -a cost of £6 each crossing, making a total of £36 for three in Victoria Street. If this was desired it would be better left until next financial year as the present funds were limited.

It was decided to hold the matter over for consideration in next year’s financial report.

Property Frontage.

Mr A. R. Harding expressed surprise at the Council’s reply to his request for It to improve the frontage to his property in Bridge Street. Probably, he wrote, under ordinary circumstances, the slope or batter would be his responsibility but the slip or creep was caused by an open drain which was not his affair. He did not wish to let the Council in for a second McGarrigle’s corner, tout he thought the- Council should assist him, and in so doing make its approach to Hamilton much more presentable at very tittle cost. The letter was received. Leases Sold. The i town clerk, Mr W. Waddel, reported that the lease of the sandpit area at Ulster Street had been sold at the upset price of £l2 per annum and that the western portion of the horse bazaar had been leased to a midget golf company at the upset rental of £l2 13s 4d, subject to the Council agreeing to a . covenant to the effect that no other portion of the building would be let for midget golf or similar games. The covenant was agreed to.

General. The application of the South Auckland Caledonian Society for use of the Horse Bazaar was decline d as the building would be otherwise engaged on the date requested. It was suggested that the Society should apply to the Defence Department for the use of its hall. An application for permission to conduct motor omnibus services between Hamilton-Matamata and HamiltonPukemiro was granted. On the borough inspector’s recommendation it was decided to contribute £lO towards a sewer' connection to property in Victoria Street provided the owner and builder came to an agreement for paying the other costs. A letter from the White New Zealand League asking the Council to support its protest re the establishment •of an Asiatic open market in Auckland, and the tightening up of immigration restrictions, etc., was received-
