DESTRUCTIVE FIRES.
FARMER’S HOME DESTROYED. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) MARTUN, Wednesday. A six-roomed house owned and occupied by Mr W. H. Coles, a farmer, of Upper Tutaenui, near Marfcon, was completely gutted by fire last night. Mr Coles was in bed. Warned by the smell of smoke he discovered the fire. A quantity of clothing and bedding was saved, also a little furniture. Mrs Coles and children were attending a confirmation service in Mar ton at the time. The house was insured for £7OO, and the furniture for £3OO in the State Office.
DEFENCE OFFICES DESTROYED. PALMERSTON N./ Wednesday. Fire destroyed the two-storeyed building at Palmerston North in which the central command of the Defence Force has been housed since 1915. The structure became practically a total, loss. It is stated that the. records were saved. v .
MOTOR-CYCLE SHOP GUTTED. DUNEDIN, Wednesday. The motor-cycle shop of Messrs. W. A. Justice and Co., was gutted by fire this morning. By quick work the brigade saved a workroom at the bach where many cars and cycles were stored, but nine, motor-cycles, which had just been landed, were extensively damaged. The top storey was rented as flats, and the brigade removed the occupants by use of an electric extension ladder. The building was owned by the firm and was insured in the Yorkshire Office for £5003. The stock, etc, was covered by the Yorkshire and other offices to the extent of £7500.
