MIDGET GOLF.

OPEN AIR COURSE. MAIN STREET REQUEST DECLINED. The city fathers are not in favour of an open air midget golf course being established on Victoria -Street. When an application came before the Borough Council last evening for permission to start one on an unstated vacant section in Victoria J or Collingwood Streets, preferably the former,, the Mayor, Mr J. J\. Fow, moved that the Victoria Street request be declined. ’ In doing so Mr Fow said the section referred to was between two banks. There was too much traffic in the main street already, and his personal opinion was that a midget golf course there would not be desirable. There would he no objection to Collingwood Street. Cr. S. V. Tyler thought permission should he granted. The section was only an eyesore at present, was unlikely to be sold, and was in the hands of the Public Trustee. The company applying would improve it. There would be the same question of traffic in Collingwood Street. An inspector could he detailed to look after traffic in Victoria Street.

In opposing the application Cr. D. D. Wilson said he did not like the tone of the letter. The company was evidently keeping something back in not divulging the place selected in Victoria Street.

Cr. Tyler explained that the company was dealing With the Public Trustee as it was a deceased estate, and the Public Trustee could not deal with the matter until he had a lead from the Council. The application for Victoria Street was declined, the Council deciding that an application for Collingwood Street would receive favourable consideration.
