CATTLE AND SHEEP.

“THE MARKET IS TRICKY.” VIEWS OF EXPERTS. “The stock market is very tricky at present, and farmers must realise that they have bought at prices which cannot be realised to-day,” said the head buyer one of the dealing firms in Auckland in conversation with a Northern Advocate representative. He said that on Wednesday he attended the Westfield sheep sales,' intending to buy 200 lambs for his firm, but only bought in 37 on account of the very high .prices. ( The range w r as from 12s to 245, with one lot bringing 265. These top prices he considered were inflated.

The meat market was very difficult, and unless growers would be satisfied with lower prices New Zealand would not be able to compete with South American and other competition this season. Tariff walls were closing the gateway for an export trade with America, and he was one who believed in retaliation, with outright preference to the Dominion’s best customer. Better for New Zealand money to circulate in her home market than go towards swelling the United States gold monopoly.

A well-known Wellington auctioneer who acted on behalf of his firm at the same lamb sales referred to by the Auckland buyer, was very disappointed from a selling point of view. He told the pressman that it was disappointing to pass from pen to pen and not receive any competition. He could not understand the wide range in the prices of lots which were sold r and considered some bidding was not well advised.
