HAMILTON EAST CLUB. PLAY ON SATURDAY. Favoured with fine weather there was a good muster of members during the week-end, and the green was in perfect order. A rink consisting of Robertson, Kingston, Warren and Tyler (s) played the holders ol' the - Williams Buttons—Glague, Lovegrove, Webster and Chapman — suffered defeat by a margin of “T points, the score being 25—18. Other games played resulted as follows: Lovegrove, Gifford, Fenton, Curry (s) 3i;Williams, Quill, Robertson, Handley (s) 12. It is anticipated four rinks will represent the club in the inter-club games with the Claudelands Club on the latter’s green on Saturday next. Gratification was expressed in club circles when it was announced that the rink which journeyed to Iluntly on Saturday, consisting of Ciague, Hitchcock, Webster and Chapman (s) had wrested the much coveted Smith Clark Shield. TE AROHA CLUB. RINKS DRAW TWICE.' ‘ A new record for the competition was established on the Te Aroha bowling greens on Saturday, when in the final for the Clothier Shield and Goldfields Stars Bowman, Mettam, Chamberlain and Williams (Paeroa) and -Bliss, Tomms, Schell, Wallace (Te Aroha) drew twice, necessitating a further match, which was completed in semi-darkness after a total cf four hours’ play. The local team in the first game of 21 heads made a splendid recovery to draw with the scores 16 all. The extra contest of seven heads, as provided in the rules, resulted in another draw of 6 all. TATUANUI CLUB. The Tatuanui uroquet Club were H fortunate in having fixed upon one of the very few fine days experienced this spring l’or the official opening of the season. Mr F. Lye, M.P., and visitors from the Morrinsville and Tahuna Clubs were present. Mr Norman Day, the patron, congratulated members on the progress the club had made during the past - year and the addition of a kitchenette to the pavilion. He extended a hearty welcome to the visitors.

Mr Lye congratulated the club on the excellent state of the Jawn which showed how well it' had been taken care of. Croquet was growing in popularity all over the country and required a great deal of skill judgment of which ladies had a large stock. Clubs like theirs provided opportunities for people to get together and know each other and promote a feeling of goodwill. He declared the lawn open for the season.and called upon the president, Mrs W. Northcott , to drive the first ball. Afternoon tea was provided and a very pleasant time was spent. Amongst the visitors entertained by the club were: —Mrs T. E. Martin, president of the Morrinsville Club, Mesdames A. M. Stirling, F. s. Donald, D. C. McLeod, G. Irvine, F. J. Cowern, A. H. BOXING IN SYDNEY. SYDNEY, November, 2. At the Sydney Stadium last evening, in a return bout of 15 rounds for the middle-weight title, in a thrilling contest Jack Haines, list 41b, fought a draw with “Young” Palmer, list. 41b., of Victoria. Haines retains the title. Palmer fought wonderfully well, and many thought he should have won. Haines was in much better form than when the pair met on October 4. There were 10,000 spectators. AN ABORIGINAL BOWLER. BRISBANE, November 2. In the first Shellield Shield match of the season Queensland is playing South Australia. Both sides are playing a number of new men. Queensland is captained by Gough. Queensland in the first innings made 289 (Carlton four for 67, Lee four for 98.) South Australia in the first ings made 72. Tliurlowc took five wickets for 25 runs, and Gilbert, who is a young aboriginal, two for 22. They followed on, and in Hie second innings had lost three wickets for 180 (Nitschke 54, Pritchard 52) when stumps were drawn.
