BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.

MEETING AT TE AWAMUTU PREPARING FOR FLORAL FETE. ..} Dr. Robertson (President) occupied the chair at a meeting of the executive of , the Te Awamutu Beautifying Society. There was a good attendance, including the Borough Council’s appointee, Cr. A. Brown. The . secretary, Mr D. Bockett, reported that the ladies met the previous day to draft a programme for the forthcoming floral fete. Mr Boclcet reported that to date £8 had been spent on the triangular plot at the corner of Ohaupo • and Cambridge Roads, and £lB on the plot near the railway station. Another £2 8s had been expended in labour on the new town hall site. The Returned Soldiers Association had provided £8 8s for labour in connection with the improvements. To a remark that the Borough Council was not prepared to negotiate for the acquisition from the Education Department of what is known as "The Civic Square,” opposite the infant school, Mr Brown stated tlfat the Department had been asked' on previous occasions, without success, to set a selling price on the property. The Railway Department wrote that it was prepared to lease the plot near the railway station to the society for beautifying purposes, at a peppercorn rental under certain conditions, from year to year, terminable at three months’ notice. The department would reserve the right to erect further hoardings, renew or remove any existing hoardings, ai\d' requires that no large shrubs be planted that may obstruct a clear view of the train.

Regret was expressed that the Department intended to continue the use of hoardings, and it was mentioned that they by no means improved the vista. At Hamilton station, the hoardings had been removed and the society there had made the locality really beautiful. It was decided to accept the Department’s offer.
