Last year’s report by the Health Ministry’s chief medical officer, Sir George Newman, shows the births in Britain numbered 643,673 and deaths 532,492. The natural increase in population was thus only. 2.9 per 1000, compared with .5 per cent, in 1928 and 15 per cent, between 1916 and 1920. Nevertheless, the health of the people is relatively sound, though deaths from cancer (56,896) are the highest on record?
