(By “Martian.”) The field for the Waikato Cup total twenty-two, of whom Bright Glow is the only candidate trained outside the province, but the Day Comet—Red Dolly mare was bred in this district. Thirteen of the field are cast at the minimum for the mile and a quarter event at Te Rapa on Saturday week. Bright Glow has 9.0, which, would not be prohibitive to the Taranaki-trained mare at her best, as she has proved herself at this distance, but more so in races a little briefer. The racing of the past,-so far as Bright Glow is concerned, has indicated the top deeds on her part at a later period of the season than the spring. Until, however, her present racing condition is revealed, she musl be kept in the foreground. " Standfast (8.3) has come rapidly forward of recent times, as a middle distance galloper. Last' month be proved equal to winning the King Edward Memorial Handicap of one mile and a quarter at Ellerslie. Just prior to this he made a bold bid for the honours in the Avondale Cup, in which ten furlong race Prodice captured him in the last little piece of the journey. By Valkyrian from Unity and consequently a half brother to that former good handicapper Te Monanul, Standfast is bred to stay on. The Matamata-trained galloper leaves the impression that he will enhance his reputation this season. His condition will be. well forward for the race less than a fortnight off. True Blood (7.12) was the winner of the' event twelve months back, with 7.1 i, while he followed the effort up by annexing the Hamilton Handicap, also ten furlongs at that period, with 7.13.- The Cornwall Handicap, with 8.0 and the Parliamentary Handicap 'at Trentham, later on in the winter with 9.0, the two latter also ten furlong events, Tell to True Blood. On the form quoted last season it would be hard to go past the Archery— Bonny Helen gelding, but the evidence from what racing he has had this season is not so favourable. Another with solid claims on last season’s successful efforts is Eager Rose (7tll). Winning deeds on her part were the Liverpool Handicap (one mile) at Eilerslie in the spring with 7.7; Christmas Handicap (one mile), at the Auckland Summer fixture, with 7.0; Herries Memorial Cup (eleven furlongs), with 7.4, and the President’s Handicap (9 furlongs, 100 yards) at Te Aroha with 8.1, and the Woodstock Stakes (one mile and a quarter) at Te Awamutu at the end of June with 9.11. The Day Comet—Wee Rose mare will be entitled to' he considered for the race ahead, although the long straight here may trouble her. Royal Doulton (7.9) would also he dangerous at her best, hut her form of late has not been up to her top standard. Mervette (7.9) will strip as well as anything in. the race, and her strong finishing run in the Members’ Memorial Handicap at Cambridge on Labour Day, to land her 'Close up to the money earners, was impressive. Gold Money (7.7) is not altogether new to middle distance racing, but her best form has been as a sprinter, in which grade she is also entered locally. The work Gold Money has been executing at Ellerslie lately indicates, however, that a start in the Cup locally is under consideration. High Pitch (7.5) won the Jellicoe Handicap in decisive fashion at the Pakuranga meeting at, Ellerslie in August. While his form has not been over-impressive, on his best day the Sarchedon —Shrill gefiling would have a cbance and more so if the track is holding. Valsier 7.3, was the winner of the big mile at Gisborne as recently as Saturday, with 8.2. This indicates that he is well. Pompeius, who leads off those in at the minimum, was second to High Pitch in the Jellicoe Handicap in August and is a lightweight possibility,

while the same can be said of Prince of Orange, who has been knocking a! the door at ten furlongs. Flying Print: . won at the distance at Taumarunui 1

May, captured the main sprint on tli closing day of the Avondale Sprin fixture, but failed in the ten furlong Members’ Memorial Handicap at Can; bridge a week hack, lor which he wu favourite. Black Maire was second ii. the race referred to, while Hakanoa who was a little unlucky to 1 be beaten in the 1 sprint on Labour Day, won ai ten furlongs last season.. Even if this class is much better, past results indicate he has prospects at a middle distance. Transformer is a hack number and Luminary is not likely io start. Biddy Comet, The Sun, Trishna, Valslreet, Bennie and Molere make up the balance, of which The Sun and Molere offer' the best prospects. Acceptances for Ibis and olhe: events on the first day of the meeting do not fall due until 5 p.m. on Friday. Perhaps ,lhe most prominent!;, discussed half dozen in the field jus! now are Standfast, Bright, Glyw, Eager Rose, True Blood, .Mervette and High Pitch. C.J.C. MEETING. .REHANDICAPS ANNOUNCED.
