CHRISTENING CEREMONY. DUCHESS’ THOUGHTFUL ACTION. LONDON, October 30. Water from the River Jordan was poured into the golden lily, font designed for the christening of Queen Victoria’s eldest daughter just before Their Majesties entered the private chapel at Buckingham Palace to-day in readiness for the baptism of the young Princess. White Yorkist roses, marguerites, heather and lilies decorated the tiny chapel which was tilled by royalties, including the white-clad Princess Elizabeth, also the Duke and Duchess of York’s relatives and servants. The baby Princess was clothed in a robe of cream satin and old Brussels lace made for the christening of Queen Victoria and used for every Royal christening since. The five sponsors included Lady Patricia Ramsay, Prince George (representing Princess Ingrid') and the Prince of Wales. The Princess Victoria, who was also a sponsor, took the Princess from the nurse and handed her to the Archbishop of Canterbury who sprinkled the water on her forehead and baptised her “ Margaret Rose.” A huge gathering of babies in prams and in their mothers’ arms were outside the Palace to witness the departure. As the car containing the Duke and Duchess of York and the Princesses swept out the crowd surrounded it, cheering and waving handkerchiefs. The Duchess ordered the car to proceed at a walking pace for a quarter of a mile, enabling hundreds to see the baby which the nurse held up.
