TE AROHA NOTES

CANDIDATES FOR WAIKATO SOME HARDY YOUNGSTERS. WORK ON THE TRACKS. ' . i (Special to Times.) TE AROHA, Thursday. The Sandstar —Waipoto two-year-old filly, Star Lap, will ’.make her debut in the Tamahere Stakes, of four furlongs, at the Waikato meeting next month. Since joining A. E. Cox’s team she has come on very quickly, and may give a good account of herself at Te Rapa. She is not a flighty sort, so her condition stands to her well.

Consequent upon the fact that he has not been re-commissioned many weeks, and that he has not had the benefit of good grass tracks for work, Antique was not particularly fancied for his Cambridge engagement, hence the good price resultant from the totalisator. He is, however, .a very strong galloper, and this stood him in good stead over the last half furlong. He looks all the better for his successful effort, and should ■be a good stake earner for the J. H. Wallace stable this season.

Being a natural galloper and an exceedingly docile track worker, Sir Russell not require a strong preparation before being asked to carry silk. He is nominated for the Waikato meeting; and judging by the fact that he was well initiated in company with Antique, may soon be sufficiently forward to race prominently.

Lucky Alice was not started at Cambridge on account of the heavy going. Many of the Lucullils breed negotiate muddy tracks in good style, but this mare is built on lighter than the majority of her relatives, and judgment was shown in withdrawing her on this occasion. On the tracks this week she is showing decidedly more vim than usual and is a pretty certain contestant for Te Rapa. A number of Te Aroha punters have a grievance. At the Cambridge meeting they intended to invest on Miss Albyn. When they looked at the number board they saw the rider’s name posted as Hines. They knew no Hines as a rider, and changed their minds in regard to backing Miss Albyn. The latter, ridden by Horne and not Hines, duly won. For the Hunt Cup at least a few local sports fancied Kawlni, and more so when they read on the board that Holland was the rider. In they went and exchanged their notes for tickets, and lo and behold, when they again looked at the riders’ names, found that of Olive substituted for Holland. If Kawinl had won they would have been happy, but he was not victorious on the occasion. King Win’s Effort. The fact of King Win being owned by Mr R. B. Hines, of Te Aroha, and the first of the King Lu stock to race, naturally created an interest in his running at Cambridge on the part of district sporting men. They were pleased to witness on Monday at Cambridge that he displayed plenty of pace, although not suited to a soft track. Rounding into the home turn he floundered somewhat, and although he finished in third place, may be expected to improve on that gallop when he can get a better grip of the turf. Te Aroha entrants for the Waikato meeting next month are fairly numerous and include Black Maire, Miss Albyn, Domination, Star Lap, Antique, Honiton, Lucky Alice, Master Latour, Volimond, Indolent, Simint, Sir Russell and Gold Day. Simint, which is nominated for the juvenile events, at Te Rapa, is a well grown gelding by Catmint Gold Plane. In point of quality he is one of the nicest Catmints seen out, and has the g'ft of galloping. Owing to the recent extended spell of wet weather precluding his regular work _ being done he may not be seen at his best on November 15, but this morning he was given barrier practice, and jumped away fairly well. Little notice may be taken of the running at Cambridge of Volimond and Honiton, for the reason that on account of weather conditions they were unable to be allotted sufficient work j during the ten days prior to the Hunt meeting. Both look improved as the j result of their efforts on Monday, and their supporters will soon have another chance of getting even on their investments on the pair. . Mr W. Stevenson’s Armenia, trained bv C R. Wallace was well supported in her Bardowie Handicap start. Her light rider, however, was not able to do his mount full justice, and the | Lucullus —Miss Kolmar mare will be | seen to belter under a higher scale of weights. On - her track form she is wen worth per&uvering with. I

The Day Comet —Elnona filly in C. R, Wallace’s team is developing nicely and bids fair to be one of the likely members of the winning family. Her trainer-owner does not intend to hurry her, but she will'be seen out under the colours early in the New Year. Track Work. Track work this morning was fairly interesting. Simint, looking very bright, ran a round at an easy gait, sprinting a furlong fast. Lucky Alice revelled in her work once round, and galloped very freely. Sir Russell cantered a round-, and sprinted down the straight in his old style. He is steadily and surely improving, and his breathing organs are better since he underwent an operation at the hands of Dr. W. C. Ring. Domination, looking none the worse for his Cambridge trip, was on his toes until he settled down, when he strode along freely over six furlongs. Solid work was allotted Master Latour. He is fining down gradually, but is still somewhat on the soft side. White Ringlet, which is coming to hand quickly, spurted along the back stretch in taking style. She is intended to make the Whangarei trip. The Marble Arch Queen Amans gelding was sent over a -mile and moved well, the Valkyrian filly moving smartly over four furlongs, while Town Bird executed a serviceable task. The latest addition to Llpsey s stable is a two-year-old colt by Musketoon—St. Amans mare. He is well grown, built on racing lines and shows thoroughbred quality. In his racing efforts he will be very noticeable in the running for in addition to being an exceedingly light chestnut he has a flaxen or yellow mane and tail. The Valkyrian filly, which will be raced by a lady owner, of Hungahunga, is furnishing satisfactorily, and has commenced track work. She is speedy, but it is yet too soon to know whether she will develop staying ability. Town Bird, who has 20 early engagements is looking exceptionally well, bright in coat, and carrying plenty of muscle. Although he has done a fair amount of racing, the Archies'town gelding is absolutely sound in wind and limb and should have little difficulty in paying his way this season. A recent accession to the stable, a two-year-old colt by Musketoon —Extractor mare, the dam of Lark Hall, is a very solid type of thoroughbred, and if conformation goes for anything

will rank with the good ones bred in the district In recent years. He is a blood bay with dark points, an intelligent head, properly set on, a nice crest, perfect shaped wither, fiat deep shoulders, good barrel, well let down muscular quarters -and flat bone. Even experts may not find it easy to fault this son of Musketoon, who is not to be hurried and may not he raced until late in the summer.
