FELT HATS

CLEANING AT HOME. It is surprising how soon felt hats become soiled during the damp, foggy days of winter. But there is no reason why they should be worn in a soiled condition, as they may be cleaned at homo quite simply and with every degree of success. Coloured felt hats are best cleaned with common salt. The salt should be warmed in the oven on a tin tray, and rubbed well into the hat by means of a piece of flannel. If the' felt is very soiled, it may he necessary to repeat the operation with a fresh supply of salt. The process is completed by brushing and shaking the hat until all trace of the salt is removed.

Black or dark felt hats should he treated with warm bran, which is obtainable from the corn merchant. The bran is applied in the same manner as the salt, care being taken to pay special attention to those parts which are very soiled.

When dealing with black hats it is an excellent plan to sponge finally with a little diluted ammonia.

In the case of beige or very lightcoloured felt, the cleaning should he performed with hot, dry powdered fuller’s earth. The hat is sprinkled with the powder and rubbed lightly with a clean, soft handkerchief. When the hat is quite clean, remove the powder with a soft-bristled brush.
