THE DELAYED HOSTEL.

EXCHANGE OF TELEGRAMS MINISTER’S REPLY. FINANCE CHIEF CONSIDERATION. The delay in the commencement of the boys’ hostel at the Hamilton High School has led to the exchange of telegrams between the chairman of the High School Board of Governors (Mr C. L. Mac Diarmid) and the Minister of Education (Hon. H. Atmore) and His Worship the Mayor (Mr J. R. Fow) and the Minister during the past month. Mr Mac Diarmid wired: “Very respectfully urge that claims 'of any other institution, however deserving, should not be allowed to interfere with our hostel scheme. History of 'this matter shows our claim to be of the strongest nature.” To this the Minister replied: “Everything possible is, being done in the' master. The position is fully understood here, but finance is the paramount consideration.” His Worship’s telegram was as follows: “Very respectfully and strongly represent that High School , hostel application should be entirely independent of Technical School application. Have agreed to call urgent meeting of citizens to protest against suggested breaking of long-standing promise at a stage when tenders had closed and public works material was on the ground. 'Trust your decision will not be made against hostel without your receiving deputation from citizens.”

The Minister replied: “Everything possible is being done in the matter, and I suggest to you that a public meeting cannot affect the question of finance. The position is fully understood here, but finance is the paramount consideration.”

Mr G. Speight said the Old Boys’ Association had written the Minister on the matter, and had . received a reply on similar lines to his telegrams.
