The cycle road race of 700 miles from Sydney to Melbourne was won by Josef Mauclair (France), who was 94 minutes ahead of his nearest opponent, Hubert Opperman. Jean Bidot, the winner’s companion, was third.. The winner’s riding time for the whole journey was 44h. 56m. 20s. At the last stage, from Shepparton, 180 miles, the start was delayed owing to adjustments to Mauclair’s machine. Some competitors complained that favouritism was being shown to the Frenchman, but the referee pointed out that others had received similar consideration.
