INTER-EMPIRE TRADE.
QUOTA SYSTEM. MR FORBES NOT ENTHUSIASTIC. United Press Assn.;—Elec. Tel. Copyright. LONDON, October 25. “I see no hope of unanimity on the question of promoting inter-imperial trade," Mr Forbes said, in an interview published in the Sunday Dispatch. "The Government has adopted the attitude of no surrender. I consider this has precluded any possibility of real progress in accepting Mr Snowden’s view' of preferential tariffs. I see -no hope in the quota system. New Zealand generally is opposed to the idea of bulk purchasing. Although I believe the Conference is doomed to be abortive, except on matters such as co-operation and research, I do not regret having come, as I have come personally in contact with leading British statesmen.” Lord Melchett and Viscount Elibank, in a letter to the newspapers, welcome Mr Baldwin’s declaration regarding tariffs in his speech on October 21, as pledging him and the. Conservative Party to a free hand in negotiations for closer Empire economic unity, including the necessary foreign food taxes, for which they have been striving. Mr Baldwin has summoned a meeting of Conservative peers and members of the House of Commons for October 30.
