ARAPUNI.
REMEDIAL MEASURES. PROTECTION OF HUMAN LIFE. ASSURANCE OF SAFETY DESIRED. (Times Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, Friday. The need for measures to be taken in connection with the repair work at Arapuni to afford protection to human life in the event of a possible breakaway of Arapuni waters was stressed by Mr J. A. Young (Reform—Hamilton), speaking in the House of Representatives to-night. Recalling that he ■ had raised the question in the House some years ago of; reasonable precautions being taken against earthquake risks, Mr Young said that an assurance had been given at the time that everything was perfectly safe- They had no_ feeling of uneasiness in view of that statement and had full confidence in Arapuni until this year’s occurrence. Mr Young pointed out that in his recent report, Professor Hornell had stated that apart from earthquakes and volcanic eruptions he thought it was quite reasonable to have erected the dam' and power-house on the site selected. Now that the position was being reviewed in view of the uncertain position of the ground between the water race and the river he asked the Minister of Public Works to see that whatever remedial works were put in hand they would be as far as humanly possible of such a nature as to ensure fair and reasonable precautions against earthquake risks.
