Last March, winner of the two-year-old handicap on the second day of the Dunedin meeting on Monday, brings his sire, Last Dart, into prominence for the first time. Last Dart was a winner in England and also in New Zealand after his arrival, and he is a well-bred horse who brings back to the colony the Musket on St Simon cross, his sire, Spearmint, being by Carbine, son of Musket, and his dam, Ultima, out of a St. Simon mare, Osy, out of Sweetwater by Musket. The fourth line of his pedigree also contains, in addition to the Musket and St. Simon cross, two other great stayers in Minting and Barcaldine. The past few seasons have seen a great revival of the Musket strain, Rapier In New Zealand being an outstanding example. Last March represents rather an interesting breeding experi-, ment. His dam, March Off, is by Markhope, a horse bred by his Majesty the King by Marcovil (grandson of Barcaldine, and sire of Hurry On) from Nadejda (a sister to Persimmon), by St. Simon—Perdita 11. Officious, dam of March On, is by Finland (son of Bill of Portland, by St. Simon) from Busybody, by Apremont from Tell Tale, by Traducer. This return to Last Dart of the Barcaldine and St. Simon blood is following Bruce Lowe’s theory when he laid it down that to produce great stake horses (and sires) you should return the stallion the best •trains of his dam. Last March is recorded as having won with ridiculous ease by six lengths. He had run unplaced on Saturday in Hie McLean Stakes. He is a bay colt owned by his breeder, Mr A. G. Hill, who also owns his sire, Last Dart.
