AUSTRALIAN CRISIS.
LABOUR AND SIR O. NEIMEYER. CONFERENCE HELD. TRADE UNIONISTS’ SUGGESTIONS. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. (Received Sept. 2, 12.25 p-m.) MELBOURNE Sept. i. Sir Otto Niemeyer and Mr Kershaw, of the Bank- of England, had an interview with the president of the Australasian Council of the Trade Unions, Mr Duggan, and other Labour representatives with the object of discussing the general effects of the financial proposals and the steps proposed to be taken to meet Australia’s obligations. The unionists said they they resented strongly the attacks that are being made on the standard of living of workers. They urged a reduction in interest, both on deposits and advances, together with a reduction of interest on external loans and rates of exchange, which would bring about financial savings without adversely affecting wage standards. Sir Otto suggested a conference between the representatives of the unions and, the employers with a view to agreeing upon a percentage reduction of wages and prices. Sir Otto Niemeyer and Mr Kershaw will leave Sydney on Thursday for New Zealand.
