RUGBY FOOTBALL.

THE WAIKATO TEAM. GAME WITH AUCKLAND. NOTES AND COMMENTS. - Of the Waikato players in the team which soundly defeated Auckland on Saturday, the Star says:— Egan, the Waikato full-back, was right on his game, his powerful punting and ability to find the line being of great value, to his side. The threequarter line, Griffiths, Fitzgerald and Carlson, was full of fire and ■ very much more effective as an attacking machine than the Auckland trio. Griffiths was about the fastest man on the field, and the neat manner in which he beat Cammick, with a change of pace and side-step when he scored the second to last try of the match, was -a delight. Carlson’s burly form was continually in the picture, and he played an excellent game. On four or five occasions he dashed through a poor defence to start an attack, while on defence he was very sound. Wilkes and St. George saw' to it that their three-quarters got the ball, Wilkes ■being the more impressive. St. George’s dropped goal was a neat effort. Alllls, behind the. Waikato scrum, was one of the. heroes of- the side. He varied his play nicely, was ever on the lookout for an opening, and even when Potter got round the scrum quicker than lie should have done he usually managed to whip the ball away. Storey, the rover/ has filled out a lot since he was at a boarding school at Auckland, and he was a sharp thorn in the Auokiand side. Wherever the ball was he was somewhere handy, and his fast following up frequently bustled the unhappy Aucklanders. As expected, the Waikato forwards played a punishing game from first bell to last. All worked like Trojans. Hooper and Lee Hon got the ball more often than not from the set scrums, and the visitors more than held their own in the line-outs. The Cameron brothers got through a tremendous amount of work, but so did all the others. TE AROHA UNION. TE AROHA v. WAIHI. This match attracted a large attendance to Herries Park, Te Aroha, on Saturday. Waihi kicked off, and their forwards quickly bustled up field. A pretty pass from Lipsey, to Towers, to Heathcote, then to McPherson, carried the play back, Thornton broke through and made ground, and Hume kicked the oval clean through the pack. By sheer force Finlayson got through the .opposing forwards. Walford and Walters broke away' from a scrummage, Thornton put in a fine line kick and Jordan exhibited dashing play. Te Aroha forwards made a drive, down to Waihi territory, but the visitors’ defence held good, McConnell sending the ball to centre. Te Aroha forced the play strenuously and from a free kick McLaren kicked a goal.—Te Aroha 13, Waihi 0. Jacobs streaked well up the line, but was pushed out, a dash through the vanguard by Walford was stopped by McPherson. Sanders took a mark, but the shot at goal went wide. The home forwards then set to work with a purpose and soon got well into Waihi’s twenty-five. The ball got out to Lipsey, who dashed over at the. corner.— Te Aroha 6, Waihi 0. Another Te Aroha attack was followed by one of the cleverest Rugby exhibitions witnessed during the season. The leather was kicked over,to Towers, who displayed rare dash. In the nick of time he transferred it to Hudson, who raced well up-field and then sent a fast pass to Lipsey. The latter took it cleanly at full speed and cleverly evading his opponents raced over the line, amid cheers. —Te Aroha 9, Waihi 0. From a line-out Clarkin broke through and kicked. Campamagiah essayed a run, but was stopped by Riddell. From half-time Waihi put in good dashing play. Thornton gained ground with a well judged line kick, and Jennings did likewise. From scrambling play, Waihi was awarded a free kick, but the attempt at goal fell short. Towers and Hudson ca'rried the play to Waihi territory and Finlayson and Payne improved the situation. Hudson got well down field, the ball went out to Towers, thence to McPherson, who used his speed-to cross, the line.—Te Aroha 12, Waiki 0. .Finlayson, Clarkin, Keaney and Caulton.were prominent in the forward attacks,'while Towers, Lipsey arid Hudson were safe in the back division. In the final spell a three-qurirter passing dash failed to materialise as AlcPherson failed to take the ball. Waihi' pressed hard, and more than once looked like scoring. Thornton made a fine attempt to get* through, but was stopped by Keaney, and Finlayson made several telling dashes. AlcPherson followed with a brilliant run, -transferred the ball to . Stewart, who, although surrounded by the visitors, reached the line and scored.—T Aroha* 15, -Waihi 0. Waihi attacked vigorously, but McPherson relieved. The oval went down to McConnell, who returned a fine line kick. Dashing play by both sides took place at half-way and time was called. Air F. J. Jonas controlled the game. It 'it not thought likely that there will be any alteration in the Te Aroha team to that which was victorious over Waihi. OTOROHANGA v. MANIAPOTO. The senior representative match between Otorohanga and Alaniapolo teams, at Otorohanga, was productive of some interesting Rugby by players from both packs. Otorohanga recorded victory with the scores registering 19 —9. The referee, Mr 11. Miller, had occasion to order a player off the field for failing to observe the rules of the game. RANFURLY SHIELD MATCH. - THE WELLINGTON TEAM. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Tuesday. The' following- team will represent Wellington in the Ranfurly Shield match to-morrow: —Heazlewood, ‘McKay, Cooke, Olivier, Nicholls, Page, Kilby, Jessup, Coulston, AlcPherson, Mc’Lean, Barry, Reid, Diedrich, Price.
