Mails which were despatched from Auckland on the 29th ultimo, per R.M.S. Niagara, via Vancouver, were received in London on the 28th instant. In the first six months of this year 188 people were killed and 3895 were injured in motor accidents in New South Wales. Of the total fatalities 107 occurred in the metropolitan area. The profit from Music Week, held in Auckland between August 16 and 23, will amount to over £250, according to a statement made at a meeting of the controlling committee last evening. Stallworthy, in a written reply to a deputation of women which recently waited on the Prime Minister, the Hon. G. W. Forbes, and himself, protesting against the admission of the students. In the course of a visit to the match factory in Wellington it was explained that wooden safety matches were not yet made in New Zealand, as the demand was not yet sufficient to justify the installation of one unit, - which would produce 20,000 boxes a day. It is steadily approaching that number, however, and it is hoped to install one of these machines in Wellington in about a year. All wax matches and the containers are wholly made in New Zealand. Of the total purchases made by the New Zealand Railways for the year 1930, amounting to £2,570,357, the purchases made within the Empire totalled £2,525,514, or 98.2 per cent., while products from the U.S.A., chiefly oils, amounted to £44,843, or 1.8 per cent. There were 11 bankruptcies in the Auckland district in August, bringing the total for the current year to 88, compared with 90 for the first eight months of 1929. The total for the month shows a decrease of four in comparison with the preceding month and an increase of one on the total for August last year. The sum of £120,000 was spent in re-forming main highways in the South 'lsland as the result of last year’s earthquake damage, stated Mr M. H. Wynyard, a member of the Main Highways Board, addressing Hamilton Rotarians at yesterday’s luncheon gathering. Mr added that this had not been a charge on the North Island but had come from the South Island highways fund. In our issue yesterday we reprinted an extract from a Christchurch paper, which was forwarded to this office, and which stated that Mr F. McNatty, of the Public Trust Office staff in the southern city, had been promoted to take charge of the Hamilton district. Enquiry locally show's this to be eroneous. Mr McNatty will be relieving at Taumarunui during the absence of the district manager there on sick leave.
