ACCESS TO SEA.

POSITION OF CHRISTCHURCH. A PROPOSAL REJECTED. (By Teleg-rapn.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. The Lyttelton Harbour Board had before it to-day the report of the commission which investigated problems of access to the sea affecting Christchurch, with special reference to a scheme for the construction of a tunnel road to the port and another scheme for a 'harbour in the Heathcote Estuary, Sumner. The commission rejected both proposals on the grounds of the cost.,, but recommended that for great efficiency the board should have control of the port line. Harbour Board members to-day rejected this proposal, declaring that the acquisition of the line and sorting sheds and shunting yards at Christchurch would be enormously costly.
