Two degrees of frost were recorded at Ruakura this morning. A branch of the National Defence League has been formed at Otorohanga. In a boxing bout at the Sydney Stadium on Saturday Gildo (Philippines) Bst 61b knocked out Tyson, Bst 71b, in the' seventh round. At the bowling carnival ,in the Pacific singles championship Nash (Epsom) defeated Wood (Balclutha) by 19 points to 17, after a close struggle all the way. It was stated at Hhe last meeting of the Wanganui Hospital Board that the plans for the new isolation block had been practically approved. They would provide for nine single-bed wards and two six-bed wards, the latter being divided into cubicles for isolation purposes. , The Mayor of Hamilton wishes us to acknowledge with thanks the receipt, of two valuable parcels of clothing sent in by Mrs Goodwin, of Kaipaki, on behalf of the Kaipald Ladies’Guild. , Particulars of the special train arrangements and cheap fares in connection with the third test football match, Britain v. New Zealand, at Auckland on Saturday are advertised by the Railway Department. Twelve workmen were killed in the second serious accident this month on the new waterworks at San Francisco. Seven men perished earlier in the month, and to-day the entire shift on one .tunnel was found dead, after an oxplosion of gas. The Minister of Health, Hon. A. J. Stallworthy, states that he has received from Dr. T. H. A. Valintine, Director-General of the Health Department, an intimation that he has reached the retirement age. Dr. Valintine will relinquish his position at the end of August. He has been Director-General, of Health since 1920. The Auokland Winter Exhibition concluded on Saturday, when, although the weather was not of th.e best, the takings £4lB, were £64 greater than on the final day last year. For the whole period of the exhibition, £33,84 was taken at the gates, a decrease of £l7O from the tbtal reached last year.
