RUGBY FOOTBALL.

TAUPIRI UNION. GAMES AT NGARUAWAHIA. . SENIORS. Ngaruawahia v. Taupirl. The opening stages of play saw a bright Ngaruawahia forward attack right on the Taupiri goal posts. This was cleared by a well placed line kick into touch. Ngaruawahia’s attack was instantly renewed and with play well in the Taupiri twenty-five, Borrill secured and forced, his way over to score.. A good kick at goal missed. Ngaruawahia 3 Taupiri ' 0 Griffiths made a good opening- from which Bishop headed a fine run to be held up by a penalty. Cuthbert kicked and followed right up to the Taupiri line again. From a scrum Ngarujtwahia were penalised and a'good kick went into touch midfield. A good open movement by the Taupiri backs reversed play and Ngaruawahia had to defend their line. Griffiths cleared and Ormsby headed play into Taupiri quarter. Austin savpd and the Taupiri forwards cleared with the ball at toe. Ormsby and Bruce broke away from a forward ruck and were unfortunate in not scoring. Taupiri forwards ,got down to It nicely and loose play returned to midfield. Bishop, Bruce, and Daley soon had Taupiri hard on the defence again. D. Smith made a clearance, but Bishop and Bruce were instrumental in holding play still in Taupiri twenty-live. From the loose midfield, Taupiri backs made an opening, all handling, with little territorial gain, the Ngaruawahia defence being too sound. White headed the Taupiri forwards in a concerted rush on to the Ngaruawahia line. Frofn a scrum Taupiri hooked and Ngaruawahia’s defence was well tried. Taupiri were in a good scoring position when Bishop savec with a force down. Half-time saw no change in the score. On resuming pLay, Bishop was immediately prominent in lead’ng a determined forward attack into Taupiri territory. From a penalty Bruce goaled. Ngaruawahia ; 6 Taupiri 0 Griffiths secured from' a line out and supported mainly by Bishop put in a fine run. Taupiri hooked from a sorum down and saved the position- 1 Taupiri forwards then became aggres- ' give, but a good chance was lost by' a force. From their own twenty-live, the Ngaruawahia forwards cleared in fine style, smothered the Taupiri back defence, and carried play into their opponents’ quarter. Taupiri’s defence was well taxed when a free kick relieved. D. Smith endeavoured to get his backs into action, but with the •heavy rain and greasy bail it was almost impossibjo. The >Tst quarter opened with a spell of hard even play midfield. Taup’ri then gained advan- I , lage and from a scramble, White se- • cured and struggled over to score, j Miller f. i ed to convert. Ngaruawahia 6 Taupiri 3 Bishop and Woodward headed a fresh attack on the Taupiri gcal-linc, j from which- position D. Smith was j prominent in making a clearance. i At this stage of the game, play was | held in the Taupiri quarter for a con- j siderablc time. The final scoring posi- i lion was lost when Taupiri hooked from the scrum, and by long kicking put Ngaruawahia behind the goal again. Jackwuys was held up on the Ngaruawahia line and a hot light was i in progress when the final whistle blew. Mr G. Edge was referee. Comments, A good fast game was spoiled by ; heavy rain which fell for the greater j part of the time. The pace was slowed ! up and good handling became almost i impossible. ‘ ; In spite of this, g&mc • ■was full of incident, and very evenly j contested, although on the. whole j , Ngaruawahia had the territorial ad- j vantage. i Ngaruawahia lost many advantages ! from the hooking, where Taupiri were j superior- Eor the rest, their forwards j were too formidable for their cp- J ponents and also did great work in j smothering the Taupiri backs who i ■were more uniform and showed j greater, effort in fostering back move-J •ments than did the Ngaruawahia j backs. Defensive play on both sides .was particularly sound. Bishop was the most prominent forward on the field. He played a phenomenally hard game both in the tight and in following. He received good support from Daley, Bruce and Borrill. Woodward showed improvement, particularly in following. Ormsby, as rover played a good game, while Griffiths was outstanding in the Ngaruawahia rearguard. The Taupiri pack were a good even lot. On the day’s play Metcalfe, Graeme, Geake and White were prominent. Jackways played a good game as rover, while D. Smith was particularly outstanding in the backs. • JUNIORS. Ngaruawahia v. Technical Old Boys * Thirds, resulted in a win for the latter. V. Mr Rogers was referee. This game as a curtain-raiser was not very impressive. It was a good even match, but lacked much which goes to make a game interesting. Mistakes on both sides were far too numerous. For the visitors, Fox kicked a penalty. Roberts scored an unconverted try and Boswell scored a try which Fox converted. Mcßurney, played a good game for the home team, but Kepdall and Fraser were well below their usual standard of play. A noticeable feature was that the visiting forwards in which Boswell. Robson, Cook and Bourne were prominent showed much greater knowledge of playing in pack formation than did the local pack.
