History was made at Eden Park, Auckland, on Saturday, when the Auckland representative team defeated the British Rugby side decisively. At Hamilton, Waikato put on 30 points against Thames Valley, who failed to register a score. The game was played in a biting wind and was spoiled during the second half by teeming rain. There was a good attendance. The Clarke Cup competition at local headquarters on Saturday was not without a surprise, Marist proving superior to Old Boys in most departments and leading by a 6-point margin at the finish. Frankton won from Cambridge by default. Marist are still at the head of the competition. 51 Hamilton High School first fifteen, who journeyed to New Plymouth, were accounted for by the New Plymouth High School first fifteen by 9 points to nil. The 'chief Association attraction at Seddon Park saw Hamilton Y.M.C.A. lead Huntly by 3 goals to nil. Accommodation was heavily taxed, there being present a crowd .estimated at 30,000. The ground was in excellent order. Spong, who was chosen for halfback, is being reserved for the Test on account of an Injured thumb. The Play. Auckland kicked off, the ball going out midway between the British 25 lin« and half-way. From the throwin Reeve gained possession, and had K r lmost reached the Auckland line when e was well tackled. A penalty to Britain was taken by Black, who had an unsuccessful shot at goal, the ball gaing to Corner, who found the line at the 25. McWilliams picked up from the line-out, and sent on to Batty who gained some ground, and kicked across to Minns as he was tackled. The ball went down to Bassett, who relieved to half-way. Batty .and L. Knight broke away, but they were held up by Novis before they had covered much ground. Britain Opens the Score. From a sacks-on-the-mill scrum the ball went out to the Auckland backs, but Ivor Jones intercepted, and opened a fine run, which carried play right down to Auckland’s 25, where Butler saved. A penalty was taken by Black, who made sure of his shot. Britain 3 Auckland 0 Ivor Jones agaiF broke away, but he was well marked, and failed to gain much ground. A scrum gave the ball to Poole, who kicked right into the hands of Corner, who found the line with a good kick. Auckland hooked smartly from a further scrum, and the backs opened a promising run, which placed Britain in a dangerous position. Beamish relieved with a long punt past the 25 line, but the Auckland pack launched a further offensive wjjich centred play in Britain’s 25. Corner gained possession, but sent out a faulty pass. Poole picked up and' kicked into the hands of Haslam, who kicked into touch. Hook came round the following scrum, and placed Auckland on the attack with a speculator. A penalty to Auckland, in a favourable position, was taken by Corner, was successful, making the Rcores: Vr Auckland 3 Britain 3
Black Narrowly Misses. \ Obstruction on the part of L. Knight gave Britain a penalty, which was taken by Black, who was just unsuccessful with a shot at goal. Lucas kicked off, the ball going to Novis, who found the line just outside Auckland’s 25. From the line-out Corner passed to Jamieson, who sent on to Haslam, and he kicked high to Bassett, who .claimed a mark. The kick returned play to half-way, where the Auckland backs combined in a smart movement, which carried play back to the British 25. A scrum infringement in the British ranks gave Auckland a penalty, Lucas finding the line about ten yards from Britain’s goal line. Black gained possession from the lineout, and passed to Ivor Jones, but Corner intercepted, and kicked out. Hadley’s Good Effort. Bowcott relieved wit]j a free, the ball going to McWilliams, who sent on to Hadley, and with Knight in support, he broke away with the ball at toe, reaching the British 25 before he was robbed. From tight play in Britain’s 25, Jamieson picked up, and running round the opposition forwards, he kicked down to Basset, who marked. Britain opened a passing movement, and Minns had to force to save. Knight attempted to break through, and sent on to Corner, who sent on to Solomon, who found the line. near half way. The Auckland forwards came through with the ball at toe, Batty and Knight forcing their way through the opposition. Aarvold intercepted, but failed to garner much ground before he was tackled. Packs Working Hard. Play at this stage was centred right on the half way line. Both packs were working hard, and Auckland were holding their own in the scrums. Aarvold picked up, and ran down the line to Auckland’s 25, where he was tackled by Solomon, who immediately after gained possession from a scrum, and opened up play with a long punt. Black Misses Again. A penalty to Britain was taken by Black, who just missed the post, and from the drop out the ball went down to Bassett, who kicked out near half way. The British backs opened another passing rush, Knowles feeding Novis, who sent on to Aarvold, and Auckland were again on the defensive. Play was temporarily suspended owing to an injury to Haslam. McWilliams intercepted a British rush, and, running across field, he kicked down to Bassett, who was tackled before he could get rid of the leather, but an infringement by Auckland lost most of the ground gained. Hook Scores for Auckland. From a scrum on the British 25, the ball went to Corner, who got in a short kick, and Jamieson, coming through fast, picked up, and passed to Hook, who went over to score. Lucas failed to convert. Auckland - 6 Britain 3 Half time came immediately after with no change in the scores. The Second Spell. Aarvold kicked off, the ball going right out, and from the following scrum Corner took the ball, and passed to Lucas, who sent on to Solomon, who knocked on, and spoiled the movement. Poole gathered in, and set the British backs in motion, but Batt-y broke through, and intercepted, to reach the British line, where he was pulled up through an infringement by L. Knight. Butler had a shot at. goal.from a penalty, and just failed to reach his objective. From the drop out the ball went to Corner, who failed to gather in, and McWilliams, snapping up, kicked down to Bassett. Hook took the return, and ran round with the ball at toe, but he was pushed out ten yards from the British line.

Bassett relieved with a penalty, Minns gathering in to return to Britain’s 25. Auckland Pressing Hard. Auckland were pressing hard, but off-side play spoiled several promising movements. Solomon took a speculator, and Batty, following up quickly, was just beaten by Basset, who forced. v Beamish Injured. Aarvold got his forwards moving, but the game was held up owing to an injury to the massive Beamish, who was solidly tackled by the diminutive Corner. ’ He was able to resume after, receiving attention. On the resumption Beamish broke through with the ball at toe, and entered Auckland’s half. • A line-out gave the ball to Corner, who passed to Haslam, who kicked down to Bassett. Minns smothered his clearance, and Auckland opened a strong rush which reached Britain’s 25. Auckland Increase Lead. Minns ran across field, to be forced out a few yards from the British line, and from the throw-in Corner passed to Hook, who fed his inside man, and Haslam dived over to score. Butler failed with the kick. Auckland * .... . ....... 9 Britain 3 Following the kick-off McWilliams took a mark, and punted down to Bassett, who found touch with his return. From loose play Corner snapped up, and passed to Haslam, whose kick went to Reeve, who kicked out. The Auckland pack forced the visitors right back to their 25 line, the British forwards going down in an attempt to stem the rush. Auckland Again. Aarvold broke away, but was tackled just as he got rid of the leather. Aarvold again gained possession, and in company with Knowles, battled his way to the Auckland 25, but Corner intercepted, and passed to Haslam, who returned to Corner,and the Auckland forwards all handled in a fine attack, which culminated in a try by McWilliams. Corner converted. Auckland 14 Britain 3 The Auckland backs launched a further offensive, Hook being forced out almost on the corner., Ivor Jones cleared from the danger zone with a run down the line, and further ground was gained with a penalty. The ball went to MtfVVilliams, who returned to Bassett. L. Knight Sent Off. At this stage the crowd became hostile to the referee when L. Knight was ordered off. He was cheered as he walked off. The British forwards came through with the ball at toe, but the movement collapsed when the leather rolled out of play. Reeve picked up from the throw in but was well tackled by Minns- In subsequent play the British pack forced the home side back to their twenty-five, where spirited play followed. Offside play on the part of Beamish gave Auckland a much needed penalty, Solomon kicked well out of the danger zone. From a scrum Corner picked up, and sent on to Haslam, who was nmied in possession, the ball going to F or Jones, who was well stopped by Corner Bowcott Raises Score. Britain hooked the ball from a scrum, Knowles running across field, but before he could kick he was stopped by Batty, who came round fast. Reeve snapped up and passed Lo Bowcott, who went over to score. Ivor Jones failed with the kick. Auckland 14 Britain 6 Lucas kicked off. the ball going right past Beamish, and McWilliams, following up, kicked down to Bassett, who punted out. The line out gave the ball to Beamish, who failed to get going before he was groundedThe English hacks gained possession, hut Hadley intercepting brilliantly and Batty coming round, took a good pass and ran right down to Britain’s twenty-live. Tight play followed,, Minns breaking through to within a few yards of the British goal. Lucas attempted a shot al goal, but was charged down. The ball went to Corner, ,who found the line just inside the visitors’ twenty-five, and from the Line out the ball went to McWilliams who kicked out. Corner broke away from a scrum, and passed on to Batty, who covered some territory before ha was overwhelmed. Beamish threw out a wild pass, which Aarvold failed to gather in, and the Auckland pack opened a dribbling rush, Solomon being nailed in- possession about ten yards from Britain’s goal line. Solomon This Time. From a scrum movement Lucas beat two tacklers and then passed to Solomon, who scored between the posts.
