HOCKEY.

WAIKATO v. WAIPA.

A DRAWN GAME, j HOME TEAM DESERVED A WIN. Waipa came to Hamilton to test their strength against Waikato at Steele Park yesterday afternoon. The game was hardly up to representative standard and on the whole Waikato deserved a win. The first half was fairly evenly contested, but Waikato kept play almost solely in the visiting territory after the interval, and hut for the efficiency of Jack, the Waipa goalie, and a solid back line, the verdict would have been different. As it was the game ended in a one-point draw. Waikato’s chief fault was lack of finish. Play opened with Waikato attacking and hot work in Waipa’s circle resulted in a 25 bully. The home team came near to scoring, but Jack, the visiting goalie, preserved his charge. Waipa retaliated with a determined attempt to win through, and they surged around the home goal, but Woods’ shot was misdirected. The home backs, Barratt, Ewan and Davies, formed a pretty solid defence. Waipa, relying on their pace, were playing a hit and run game, and several rushes were effectively checked .by Ewan. The greens got down again, when a free was given the reds for a turn on the ball. Hampton and Conradi are an unusually good combination, and carrying the ball between them to the visiting circle they gave Craig a chance but his shot went wide. A few minutes later the Waipa forwards, with a pretty piece of combination, advanced upheld and Woods scored a beautiful goal. Waipa 1 Waikato 0 The visitors were nearly successful again a few minutes later when West had run out to save and the visiting right wing got behind him. Sticks were, however, given, and an awkward situation was thus saved. ’ Waikato were in a very strong scoring position when a free was given them owing to a breach by’ one of the visiting backs, right in front of the Waipa goal. Rogers was playing- a good forward game for the visitors and was receiving good support from Woods, Finch and ihe brothers Spiers. Jack was called upon several times and did not fail in his trust. Ewan drove the ball from one end of the field to the other and it was followed up by the green forwards. A scrimmage in the goalmouth saw the ball trundled through by Conradi, Jack not having a chance. Waipa ’ 1 Waikato . . 1

Waipa came back with a great forward rush in which Spiers, Rogers, Woods and Gibson were associated. Woods intercepted the ball and sent to centre, and . a goal seemed certain. West, the home goalie, did great work, however, and earned applause for maintaining his citadel intact. Halftime arrived with the scores unaltered. Second Spell.

The second half opened with Waikato attacking. Pressure was maintained by the greens, Barratt, Ewan and Davies, the home backs, preventing the ball crossing even the centre line. Play raged about the visiting circle and a particularly hot scrimmage lasting nearly two minutes rigliL alongside Waipa’s goal, caTne to no-' thing owing to the goalie scooping up and throwing out just as a goal seemed certain. Practrrslly the whole of the first quarter of an hour of the second spell was spent in the visiting half, though Hinton, the solid, sure hitter of the visiting back' line, broke through and got well downfield, but through lack of support his effort was wasted. Wood also got through and, working 1 with Finch on the right,, transferred play for a short time to the home circle. The reds, however, seemed unable to withstand the pressure of their opponents, and the visiting goalie was kept on the qui vivo as the greens persevered around him. They were, however, unfortunate in not being able to find the opening, which was due to the splendid work of the goalie and backs. As time approached, Waipa got down, but Davies saved the situation, as he had done repeatedly, and he must have been a source of consolation to West. The end came with the score: Waikato 1 • Waipa i The game was efficiently controlled by Messrs G. Hunter and C. A. Finch. SATURDAY’S GAMES. TIIE DRAW. Senior.—Hinemoa v.
