HOCKEY.
WAIKATO AT THAMES. NOTES AND COMMENTS. The Waikato hotkey representatives travelled to Thames on Saturday and played a friendly match with the Thames -Hauraki representatives and defeated them by 7 goals to 3. The ground was very heavy, rain falling throughout the whole game and the ball was often floating on the numerous pools. A good game for the conditions resulted and had the ground been dry a really first-class exhibition would have been staged. Taken on the whole, the Waikato team played a great game, the combination of the forwards being brilliant considering the state of the ground. With one or two alterations the Waikato team will be considerably strengthened and should do well this year in their representative fixtures. Local Players Reviewed. M. West, the goalie, was not over worked though he effected one or two good saves. lie had no hope of stopping the three goals registered against him. Ewan and Davies, the full-backs, were exceptionally safe, Davies probably being the best, back on the field. This was probably due to the invaluable help given him by Ewan, whose work in bustling the opposing forwards was of a high standard. Vincent, Haverbier and Goodwin, the' halves, played fair games, tfle latter being the most prominent. Both Haverbier and Vincent found it hard to keep their feet on the slippery ground. Hammond was not impressive oi the right wing and seemed to be troubled with his injured ankle. Hampton scored two good goals and played a very steady game as inside right. Conradi, the centre forward, was always on the ball, but was penalised several times for obstruction. Craig played well as inside left, the goal lie scored being a really brilliant effort -from a rebound. He was sound at all times. McLachlan was sound as outside left, especially in the first half, but in the second spell he spoilt one or two promising movements through being penalised for offside play. COUNTRY WEEK TOURNEY.
