HAMILTON EAST.

CITIZENS’ ASSOCIATION. / THE ANNUAL MEETING. PRESIDENT RE-ELECTED. The annual meeting of the Hamilton /East Citizens' Association was held last evening, the president, Mr W. A. Curteis, presiding over an attendance of twenty-one, including Cr. W. Bourne and Cr. R. Cobbe. Reference to the membership of the association was made by the chairman. He felt confident that if the aims and objects of the association were better kno'Cvn among residents and business men in their part of the borough, a large increase in membership w-ould be recorded. He briefly referred to the community lighting scheme for Hamilton East, and the many benefits that must follow its inauguration. There was no better site for a motorists’ camp than that at Hamilton East, said Mr Curteis. The Automobile Association desired the co-operation of the association in its efforts in this direction, and it would be an excellent opportunity for providing work for the unemployed. Every precaution could be taken, with the employment of a caretaker, to obviate the undesirable element that had spelt the ruin of other camps in the borough. Such a camp, the chairman pointed out, would be a decided asset to Hamilton East, and they should leave no stone unturned to realise their objective. Mr Curteis paid a tribute to Crs. W. Bourne and R. Cobbe, whose work on the council had been reflected in the many improvements in Hamilton East. An had been made to get further concessions in connection with the post office. These concessions would be given when the volume of business warranted them. It was, In their interests, therefore, that they should use ■ the East post office as much as possible.

Tribute by Councillor. In speaking to the annual report and balance-sheet, Cr. W. Bourne paid tribute to the efforts of the executive of the association over the past year. It was the association that had been responsible for 'the many improve-' ments effected. Twelve new members were elected. It was decided that the association endeavour to have a seat erected'in front of the Masonic Hall. It was - pointed out by Mr W. Weal that the gate to the entrance to Steele Park, near the children’s playground, was not utilised by the public, and instead access was gained through an opening in the barb-wire fence. This access was a danger to children. It was his opinion that the gate should be shifted to the r corner of the ground, at the point at which the children climbed through. The practice . of certain citizens making use of the park as a right-of-way was criticised by members, and it was feared that no good will result from shifting the gate to the corner. Mr J. H. Boyd stated that he would like to see the entire fence round the parts removed. It would considerably improve the appearance of the park, and obviate the expense incurred in maintaining a fence that was nothing but a liability. Domain Lands. Reference was made by Mr S. J. Rawiinson to the state of a considerable area of Domain land in Hamilton East. He considered it an excellent idea that they approach the Domain Board with the suggestion that the association appoint a sub-committee io co-operate with the Domain Board in the control of Domain lands in their part of the borough. A sub-committee, consisting of the president, Mr W. A. Gurteis, and Mr J. 11. Boyd, was appointed to confer with the Automobile Association in furtherance of the motorists’ camp proposal. It was decided as a recommendation that, the postal authorities be approached with the object of obtaining direct telephonic communication to the Hamilton East Post Office. It was pointed out by' Mr S. J. Rawdinson that a charge of 4d was incurred by anyone desiring to ring up the office. It was ! decided to make representations to the postal authorities to have the luncheon hour of the office altered from 12 o’clock to 1 o’clock and from 12.30 to T. 30. x. Election of Officers. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mr W. A. Curteis; vice-pre-sident, Mr J. H. Boyd; secretary and treasurer, Mr N. Attwood; auditor, Mr L. Turner.
