NOXIOUS WEEDS
EFFORTS TO ERADICATE. NEW PLYMOUTH, Monday. In an address to farmers at Waipuku the director of the fields branch the Department of Agriculture, Mr J, W. Deem, referred to successful results obtained in the use of sodium chlorate in destroying blackberry. The best method of dealing with blackberry, Mr Deem thought, would be to cut the vine and sprinkle some undiluted crystals around the plants. Mr Deem said, in connection with ragwort, he would unhesitatingly advise , farmers to spray plants at present and not in the spring, as he had formerly recommended. The plants now were low and conlined in nature. The crystals of sodium chlorate proved most effective when mixed no stronger than from--2 to 5 per cent.', or not more than half a pound of crystals to a gallon of water. Solutions of up to 10 per cent, did no better work and had a tendency to affect the- pasture grasses if carelessly applied. The slightest touch of the spray would kill ragwort within three days.
