WINTER FIRES We often hear of waste hy way of slack that accumulates in your eoal 'bin. This is inevitable but it can all be used and used profitably. BUILDING A FIRE. To get the maximum heat from an open grate, to use your rue economically, start your fire in the ordinary way with a fey, sticks of light wood, put on a few pieces of heavier wood and then a couple of shovels of coal, then a'couple of shovels of small coke (slightly wet). When this has a good hold put on a few vegetable peelings. This wall have the effec of steadying up the fire. You can then put on two or three shovels of slack. The result will be a good steady fire that will bum for hours and verv little heat will go up the chimney. Re-fuel with slack and coal.
