TE PUNINGA.

Presentation to Teaoher. There was a large gathering of Te Puninga and Brookfield settlers at the Brookfield (Hall, when a social Jdtohen evening was held in honour of Miss M. Newbegin, who has been assistant teaoher at Te Puninga school for the past six years, and has resigned in view of her approaching marriage to Mr Wells, of Te Puninga. On behalf of the householders of the district Mr D. J. Wright, former chairman of the School Committee, made a presentation of a canteen of outlery, suitably inscribed, and in doing so emphasised how much parents appreciated the patient work Miss Newbegin had carried on in instructing the children of the primers and bringing out the best in them. Messrs E €. Old and C. Cates also spoke in appreciation of the services 'rendered to the school by 'Miss Newbegin. Much interest was shown in the opening of the parcels of gifts from friends ia the district. On behalf of the settlers Mr A. S•Lamb referred to the good work Miss Newbegin had done for the district, not only as a capable teacher, but also as secretary of the Tennis 'Club, and by giving musical help at concerts. Mr Wells replied on behalf of his fiancee,* thanking their many friends for the gifts and intimating that they intended to make their home in the Te Puninga district. Music for the dancing was provided by the Te Puninga orchestra, comprising Miss R. Ebbett, Messrs H. Henderson, J. Marshall and R. Patterson, and extras were played by Misses >L. Saxton, E. Dakers and Mr Paterson. Supper was served by the ladies.

Enlarging the Hall.

The question of enlarging the hall, which was opened in the spring,, has been under consideration, and it is probable that something will be done in the near future. The large attendances at all functions in the district warrant increased acoomomdation, so that ways and means of financing the enlarging of the hall are being kept in view by the committee.
