UNEMPLOYMENT.

SOLVING THE PROBLEM. SITUATION GETTING WORSE. (Bv Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. Piecework or payment by results, as a solution of the unemployment problem, was urged by Mr. C. Mclntosh in his presidential address to the provincial conference of the North Canterbury district branch of the Farmers’ Union. He said: “ The unemployment situation seems to be getting gradually worse and it must be tackled in a businesslike way. We appear to be starting at the wrong end. It is better to erect a fence at the top of a precipice than maintain an ambulance at the bottom. In my opinion it is not the high rate of wages paid that is thfe cause of unemployment, but the low output per man for . wages received, which makes the article manufactured 100 costly,, thereby not finding a ready sale.” DEPUTATION TO MINISTER. WHAT IS BEING DONE. NO CONFIDENCE IN GOVERNMENT. ibv Telegraph.—Press Association.) y WELLINGTON, Friday. Replying to a mass deputation of unemployed, there being about 60 present, Hon. G. W. Forbes to-day stated that the Government was doing its best. It had already put 2000 men on relief work,, and was endeavouring to place 150 more in the next three weeks. They were asking local bodies to hasten all works, and were also taking steps to provide relief works during the coming winter. There would be a meeting in Wellington next week of local bodies for the purpose of seeing what could be done for charitable relief and also the provision of works, and he hoped that a similar meeting would be held in the other centres. The deputation was not satisfied with the proposals of the Government, and passed a vote of no-confidence in the United Party then and there.
