SHIPPING INTERESTS.
CONFERENCE IN SYDNEY*. SYDNEY, May 22. A conference of shipping interests and shippers was opened at Sydney to-day, being the first since the recent legislation was passed enabling shipowners and shippers to enter into contracts for the carriage of goods. The main purpose of the conference is to determine how far freight rates can be maintained at the present level having regard to the severe depression and the Federal Government’s embargo upon cargoes from overseas. The chairman is Mr T. S* Gordon. The deliberations are being held in private.
