On the eve of the first National Safety week being held throughout Britain the toll of the roads at the week-end was one of the heaviest recorded. The fatalities include a husband, wife, and a three-year-old son, and the wife’s mother, who were all killed when their- car skidded and collided with an empty bus near Wakefield. Another crash occurred at Wolverhampton, the father and ' mother being killed and two children injured when a motor cycle and side-car overturned-
GIRL INJURED. KNOCKED DOWN BY CAR. ACCIDENT AT FRANKTON. A broken' collar-bone was sustained by Miss Ruby Charlotte Beswick, aged 20 years, of Norton Road Extension last evening, when she was knocked off her bicycle by. a car driven by Mr Harold Rout, a farmer of Frankton, near Norton Hall. A sister of Miss Beswick, Ivy, aged 18 years, who was also knocked down, escaped injury. Mr Rout was proceeding in the direction of Rotokauri when the accident occurred. BOY SERIOUSLY INJURED. RAN IN FRONT OF CAR. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) BLENHEIM, Monday. A lad named Richard Reardon, son of Mr P. Reardon; the well known trainer, met with a distressing accident on Saturday afternoon, when traffic was returning to Blenheim from the races at Waterlea racecourse. A taxicab had taken a party from the race course to town, and was returning for a second load when Reardon appeared suddenly from between a long string of cars proceeding towards Blenheim, and ran right in front of. the taxi. The lad was thrown off his feet, and fell between the wheels of the car, which passed over him. He crawled out from the rear of .the vehicle, and the driver lost no time in conveying him to the Wairau Hospital, where he was found to be suffering from head injuries and abrasions. MOTOR CYCLISTS INJURED. AUCKLAND, Monday. A compound fracture of the left leg was received by a motor cyclist, Mr John Edmond White, aged 20, of Epsom, as the result of a collision with a motor car. As the result of his machine skidding, a motor cyclist, Mr Frederick Arns, aged 2-4, of Devonport, fell and received injuries to the head. A motor cyclisct, Mr John Barclay, aged about 30, of Glen Eden, received injuries to the shoulder when his machine collided with a motor car. FATAL SEQUEL TO COLLISION. CHRISTCHURCH, Monday. Arnold John Bennett, aged 21, died in Christchurch Hospital on Saturday as a result, it is believed, of injuries received in a collision in August, 1929, when he wAs riding a motor cycle. He was treated for a fractured skull, and. then discharged,- but was re-admitted on April 18 with> an abscess that was pressing on the brain.
