ALLEGED FRAUDS.

While detectives were investigating the affairs of the Australian Federal Life and General Assurance Company—three officials of which are under arrest—a large crowd of people gathered outside the office and made a hostile demonstration against some of the officials. An ugly situation appeared to be imminent when the investigation officers escorted an official of the company to a motor-car, in which he was driven away amid angry shouts and jeers. Another official evaded the crowd toy leaving the building through an entrance at the back. A formidable pile of statements has already been tendered to the police toy people who allege that they have lost heavily toy their investments with the company, or by policies taken out with it. The amount said to be involved in the oharges against the three principals arrested is more than £500,000.
